Should corruption by public officials carry much harsher punishment?

Corruption cases often drag on for years, and few end in a conviction.

The case for

  • Harsh penalties send a strong signal and raise the cost of taking bribes.

  • Public office is a trust, and abusing it deserves more than a slap on the wrist.

The case against

  • Harsher punishment means little if cases are never proven; speed and certainty matter more.

  • Tough laws can be misused against political opponents.
