Should students be allowed to use AI tools like ChatGPT for homework?

Most students now carry a tool that can write an essay or solve a maths problem in seconds. Schools are split between banning it and teaching with it.

The case for

  • AI can act as a patient personal tutor, especially for students who cannot afford tuition.

  • Using AI well is a skill students will need at work, so schools should teach it rather than ban it.

The case against

  • Copying an answer skips the thinking that homework exists to build.

  • Teachers can no longer tell what a student actually understands.
