Should Indian cities be designed for people on foot rather than cars?

Broken footpaths, missing crossings and parked cars push pedestrians onto the road in many Indian cities.

The case for

  • Safer streets, healthier people and more customers for local shops.

  • Most short trips could be walked if walking were pleasant and safe.

The case against

  • Deliveries, ambulances and elderly or disabled people still need vehicle access.

  • Most of our cities were built around roads and cannot be redesigned overnight.
