Should voting be compulsory in India?

A large share of eligible voters skip every general election. A few countries make voting compulsory and fine people who do not vote.

The case for

  • Results would better reflect what the whole country wants.

  • Leaders would have to pay attention to everyone, not just the groups that turn out.

The case against

  • Forced votes may be uninformed or random.

  • Enforcing it across India would be hard and could end up punishing the poor; not voting is also a choice.

Yes. off-course. Government is providing a dedicated holiday and it should not be used as a picnic day. While some people are dedicated voter and I respect that. others take it too casually
