Should MPs and MLAs face term limits?
Some politicians hold the same seat for decades. Term limits would make them step aside after a fixed number of terms.
The case for
It would bring in fresh leaders and ideas.
It would make it harder for individuals and families to entrench themselves in power.
The case against
Voters would lose the freedom to re-elect a representative who is doing a good job.
Experience would be lost, and power could shift to unelected officials.
