Should political parties' finances be public and independently audited?

Elections cost enormous amounts of money, but voters often cannot see who is funding the parties asking for their vote.

The case for

  • Voters could see who might expect favours in return.

  • Open, audited accounts would build trust in politics.

The case against

  • Donors to opposition parties could face pressure or harassment.

  • Heavy compliance could burden small and new parties the most.
