Should JEE, NEET and other entrance exams count for less in admissions?

For millions of students, a few hours in one exam hall decide which college they get into, and often which career they end up in.

The case for

  • A single exam rewards access to coaching and performing under pressure, not just ability.

  • Looking at school record, projects and interests would capture talent the exam misses and ease the pressure on students.

The case against

  • A common exam is the fairest yardstick across very different schools and boards.

  • Interviews, essays and extracurriculars tend to favour students with money and connections.
